OBITUARY. 12 March 1933. Mr. J.T. HARVEY. A native of Eldorado and a resident of Chiltern from childhood days in the person of John Thomas Harvey died at his residence, Nicholas Street, Chiltern, on Saturday evening last. He had been in good health up to the week prior to his death,wh en he had an apoplectic seizure. Pneumonia supervened and he died as stated. Deceased was 56 years, being a son of the late George B Harvey and Mrs. Harvey, old identities of the Eldorado and Chiltern Districts. As a youth he entered theemplo y of the late William Scott, grocer of Conness Street, Chiltern. There was plenty push in him and he travelled New Zealand and Tasmania in order to better his position. pereginations did not benefit him financially, but he gained greatworldl y experience by coming into contact with strange mankind. He returned to Chiltern and became a farmer, selecting various blocks of virgin forest land between Chiltern and Barnawartha. By dint of hard work over long hours in all kingsof weathe r he converted the best parts of an uninviting wilderness into a splendid grazing proposition. He succeeded where hundreds of others would have failed and given up in despair. He was well versed in politics and loved an argument. There were no t many points in the political game that escaped his notice, and he could hold his own in an argument with the best of men. He was a first water loyalist- true first to his country then to Britain. It was his constant boast thathe was at heart a Britisher. Local affairs interested him and he was connected with several movements particularly the Progress Association when it was a live body and the Australian Natives Association of which he was treasurer. He wasChilternshire Po und keeper for a number of years and carried out his duties most faithfully. He leaves besides a sorrowing widow a family of four daughters, (Miss Mavis, Millicent, Alma and Irene) and one son (Mr. John) . Messes S andD.F,Harvey of Chiltern ar e brothers of deceased. On Monday the funeral Cortege proceeded to the Chiltern New Cemetery where the reading of the funeral service was conducted by the Rev G.D. Phillips (Presbyterian) Mr F.O. Smith was theundertakers.
