Toowoomba Cem., SecCE 19-24 Block 19 Allot 20 C of E Bur HH601. It is a strange coincidence that I should receive your letter inquiring about John Cran just as I was completing an article on Robert Cran, John Cran's older in the Jondaryan Woolshed member's magazine.

I have managed to gather together quite a bit of information on the Cran family and I will set out what I have on John Cran.

John Cran was born on the 14th of April 1823 at Towie Aberdeen, Scotland, the second son and child of John Cran and Jean (Petrie), a lower middle class working family John Cran (Jr) like his brothers received a basic education giving him aprofic iency in the three R's

In 1858, at the age of 35, John Cran decided to immigrate to Australia to join his older brother Robert who had been in Australia for some years. John Cran travelled to Australia on an assisted passage and arrived at Jondaryan station in thebran d new colony of Queensland in 1859, where his brother Robert had been working as an overseer for many years. On Jondaryan station, which was then under the control of the Kent & Wienholt partnership, John Cran was given employment as agenerally useful.

In August 1861 John Cran went to Rosalie Plains, a station owned by the Kent & Wienholt partnership, having a common boundary with Jondaryan. John Cran worked there as a lamber for two months before being promoted to the position of overseer and sent to Mt. Hutton station on the Dawson River, a newly established station owned by the Kent & Wienholt partnership. He remained on Mt. Hutton station until the end of May 1864, before returning to Jondaryan, commencing work there on the 1stof June 1864 as an overseer.

John Cran met his future wife Eleanor Morris on those occasions when she visited her sister Elizabeth, (Mrs. James Miers) on the station; John Cran was very friendly with the Miers. John and Eleanor were married in Brisbane on the 14th of July 1868; they had six children, three boys and three girls.

John Cran remained on Jondaryan station as an overseer for most of the rest of his life, finishing up work on the 3rd of June 1893, at the age of 70 years, having worked for the Kent and Wienholt partnership for 34 years, the whole of the time he was in Australia. He retired to Toowoomba, where quite unexpectedly, he died four months later onthe 5th of November 1893.

I note that you list the names of John and Eleanor's children, but I can't work out the dates you have given with them, unless you are indicating that all the boys died in their first year of life. I have a copy of an obituary for John Cran, whic h states that he was survived by all his children, most of whom were grown up at the time of his death; something doesn't add up there.

If you are interested in any of the other members of the Cran family, I can pass on to you what information I have on them. We know the family lived in Toowoomba and they too worked on Jondaryan Station. Prospect Place, a large new village a quarter of a mile north east of Old Radford, contains about 1,150 inhabitants, who are principally employed in the lace and hosiery trades, and contains two factories. A General Baptist Chapel was erectedher e in 1834. Queensland. Mar.NO 3598. 1861 census age 21, Occ. Sewing Machine Hand Hosery operator, living at No.16 Long Row, St Peters Parish, Radford, Nottinghan. Arrived Brisbane on the ship Conway 1143 tons with migrants !Queensland Certificate No 706 1497! John died from Uraemia at the age of 81 years. Aspley named after John Morris's farm on Cabbage Tree Creek, AspleyGro e or Aspley Orangery) was named after Aspley Hall near Radford, Nottingham, John apparently did not like farming or the farm was too small and could not support him so hebeca me a Cotton Lace maker at Radforb, Nottingham, England where some of the Maltby family lived and worked. John.had a sheep dip in Brisbane before going to farm at Aspley.
