Major-General Francis Slater-Rebow?English, c. late 18th century - early 19th century
In 1796, General Francis Slater of Chesterfield married Mary Hester Rebow. She was the eldest daughter and co-heir of Isaac Martin Rebow [d. 1781] of Wyvenhoe Park, Essex, Colonel of the East Essex Militia, Recorder and Member of Parliament forC olchester. Gen. Slater then assumed the surname of Rebow. He and his wife had a daughter (and heir), Mary Martin Slater-Rebow [d. 1842], whose second husband, John Gurdon, upon their marriage in 1835 also assumed the Rebow surname. In 1816,the G eneral commissioned John Constable to paint a landscape (now in the NGA) of the Slater-Rebow's Wivenhoe Park estate.
